Tyne Tees Express consultation leads to results for passengers later this year

Date: 27 Jan 2012

PASSENGERS who responded to consultation from bus operator Go North East about improvements to the Tyne-Tees Express X9/X10 service are to be rewarded with new vehicles.

The new double-deck buses represent an investment of £1.1 million by Go North East and will be introduced in summer 2012 as a direct result of the public consultation hosted by the bus operator.

The Tyne-Tees Express X9/X10 runs half-hourly between Tyneside and Teesside, serving Newcastle, Gateshead, Heworth, Peterlee, Billingham, Norton, Stockton and Middlesbrough along the way.

Now, thanks to the views expressed in the consultation, both services are to be upgraded with new vehicles. Customers were also asked what extra features they would like to see on the double-deck buses. The most popular (selected by 61% of respondents) was ‘more powerful engines to speed up journeys and improve reliability’. This was followed by ‘Wi-fi internet access’ (54%), ‘air-conditioning’ (51%) and ‘more legroom between seats’ (48%).
Further announcements will be made during the next 2-3 months about the precise launch date and the additional features that will be available on the buses.

Martin Harris, Commercial Director of Go North East, said: “We’ve been looking at ways to better meet customers’ needs and we’re pleased that hundreds of people took the time to contact us. The results are reflected in the changes we will be making.

“It also goes to show that we are not arguing with Nexus and the Integrated Transport Authority over so called ‘Quality Contracts’ to protect the status quo. We embrace change but it must be the right kind of change that will bring real benefits to passengers. The Quality Contracts proposal, in our opinion, is totally inappropriate for passengers and, should it be sanctioned, will result in fewer bus services that are more expensive.

“We are committed to delivering further service improvements through innovation, investment and via closer working relationships with our public and private sector partners. Currently we are working with our customers, staff and other stakeholders to shape the Go North East Charter for Positive Change that will be published on the soon to be launched website for all to see. This charter will offer a credible alternative to Quality Contracts and include real measurable benefits for passengers. The shaping of the charter will be an iterative process and will be evidenced by significant and on-going customer consultation.”
