The improvements will be made to coincide with the move of the main Gateshead College campus to Hawks Road near Baltic.

We have listened to what customers have said and plan to make the following improvements –

Monday to Friday peak time services will be increased to operate every 10 minutes between the new Gateshead College Baltic Campus and Team Valley South End. This will significantly improve access to these two important sites from Gateshead with no need to consult a timetable at busy times.

Monday to Friday evening services between 1800 and 2200 will be increased to operate every 15 minutes between Gateshead Interchange and the new Gateshead College Baltic Campus to improve access to the college for evening courses.

We will be launching a stunning new brand to the service to enable customers to identify their bus more easily. This will have a black base with gold lettering and has been achieved in partnership with our partners at Access Team Valley and Gateshead College.

As a result of increased frequency, Loop buses will depart from stand C in Gateshead Interchange and to simplify things, journeys on service 193 will be withdrawn.

The easy route to Gateshead College
Our new Loop service will provide direct, frequent connections for students attending any of the Gateshead College sites as it links them up! Whether you are attending the new Baltic Campus, the Skills Academies on Team Valley or the Academy for Sport at Gateshead International Stadium, The Loop will take you there! get connected

If you don’t live directly on The Loop the diagram below shows where you can change services to join The Loop. In addition to this, there are timed connections with most services at Gateshead Interchange to both Team Valley and
Gateshead College.

Making life simpler and easing the Congestion
The Loop service has just got better and better over the last three years. This is largely due to the ‘kickstart’ funding received from the government through the Department for Transport (DfT) to increase the frequency of this service to every 15 minutes in January 2005. This funding ends in January 2008.

During this time we have managed to implement a number of infrastructure schemes in partnership with Gateshead Council to get ‘The Loop’ moving through the traffic more quickly and making life easier for our customers including:

Amending the route taken by buses through the South End bus station at Team Valley to reduce delays associated with the Team Valley Retail Park.

New shelters at all stops on Kingsway through Team Valley.

Extension of the yellow box markings on the exit from Heworth Interchange to make it easier for buses to get back into the flow of traffic.

However, just because the funding has ended we are not stopping there! We plan to continue to work with our partners and make the following additional improvements over the next twelve months:

Completion of the implementation of ‘bus stop clearways’ on the whole route to ensure that stops are kept clear of other traffic to allow customers to board The Loop easily.

Junction improvements at Cuthbert Street / Bensham Bank and at the junction between Queen Elizabeth Avenue and Old Durham Road to give greater priority to buses.

Improving the traffic light phasing near Gateshead Stadium at the junction with the A184 to give buses greater priority.

Amending the traffic calming through the Old Fold Estate to be more ‘bus friendly’.
